Following the scan of your heart and lungs, the technologist will perform a scan of your abdomen.
No preparation is required. You will need to hold your breath for several seconds while the scan is in progress.
The abdominal scan is an excellent test for detecting gall stones, kidney stones and arterial aneurysyms.
(An aneurysm is an abnormal dilatation of an artery. It's significance is that as the size of an artery increases,
the risk of bursting increases.) The abdominal scan can also detect some forms of liver, pancreas, adrenal gland and
kidney cancer as well as enlargement of the lymph nodes and spleen that may indicate the presence of lymphoma or other cancers.
The abdominal scan will also show the bones in your spine in great detail and will show if there is any arthritis in your spine.
In women, the scan will also detect the presence of uterine fibroids.

This abdominal scan does not provide an adequate view of the colon, and thus does not replace the need for colonoscopy.
It also does not provide adequate screening for ovarian, prostate or testicular cancers.
If you are concerned about these conditions, please discuss appropriate evaluation with the radiologist
or your primary care physician or specialist.
